Introduction to the Books of the Bible
The Letter to the Colossians
The Epistle to the Colossians presents Jesus Christ as the centre of the universe, the active Creator, and the recipient of creation. It calls believers to lead godly lives rooted in understanding who Jesus is and what He has done for humanity. It is a call to steadfast faith, fervent service, and unity in the body of Christ.
The central theme of the epistle is the preeminence of Christ. Paul affirms that Jesus is not just a unique man, but God in flesh. He asserts that “in Him all the fullness of Deity dwells in bodily form” (2:9), and that He “reconciled all things unto Himself” (1:20) by “having nailed it to the cross” (2:14), referring to our sins. This affirmation of Christ’s divinity and His redemptive work on the cross is a direct counter to the heretical teachings that were infiltrating the Colossian church.
The Letters to the Thessalonians
The Epistles to the Thessalonians present a comprehensive view of Christian living, emphasizing faith, love, and hope. They guide how to live in anticipation of Christ’s return, encouraging believers to lead lives that are pleasing to God. These letters serve as a reminder of the joy and hope that comes from a steadfast faith in Jesus Christ.
The First Epistle to the Thessalonians is a testament to the faithfulness of the Thessalonian believers and a guide for holy living1. Paul commends their faithfulness to the Lord and encourages them to continue in their faith. He emphasizes the second coming of Jesus Christ, providing hope and encouragement1. He also offers practical guidance on how to live a godly life, encouraging believers to walk in love, pray continually, and give thanks in all circumstances.
The Second Epistle to the Thessalonians continues the themes of the first letter. Paul provides further instruction on the return of Christ, correcting some misunderstandings that had arisen. He also addresses issues related to idleness in the community and encourages believers to lead disciplined lives.
1 Kings
The Book of 1 Kings is a narrative exposition of contrasts – between obedience and disobedience, godly and ungodly leaders, and the consequences that follow. It serves as a reminder of the importance of faithfulness to God’s commandments and the dire consequences of turning away from Him. It begins with the final days of King David’s rule and covers the reign of his son Solomon, followed by the division of the kingdom into Israel and Judah.
The narrative then shifts to the divided kingdoms of Israel and Judah, ruled by a series of kings. Many of these kings lead the people away from God, promoting idolatry and disobedience. Notable among these are King Ahab and Queen Jezebel, who elevated the worship of Baal in Israel. Amid this spiritual decline, the prophet Elijah emerges as a beacon of God’s power. He challenges the prophets of Baal in a dramatic showdown on Mount Carmel, affirming God’s supremacy.
