Introduction to the Books of the Bible

The Revelation

The Book of Revelation, also known as the Apocalypse, is the final book of the New Testament. It is a prophetic work attributed to John the Apostle, who received visions from Jesus Christ while exiled on the island of Patmos.

The book contains many figurative illustrations that can be difficult to interpret. There are differing opinions on whether the book talks about past events or allegorically about visions of the future. Some of the imagery stems from John’s Jewish experience (i.g. the Book of Life!) Ultimately, the Book of Revelation offers hope and encouragement to believers, assuring them of God’s ultimate victory over evil and the establishment of His eternal kingdom.

Haggai

The book of Haggai is a powerful and concise prophetic message that calls God’s people to prioritize their relationship with Him and to rebuild His temple. Written around 520 B.C., Haggai’s prophecy comes at a time when the Israelites had returned from exile in Babylon and were struggling to rebuild their lives in Jerusalem.

Jude

The Letter to Jude is a brief but powerful message that addresses the challenges believers face in maintaining their faith amidst false teachings and immoral behaviour. Written by Jude, the brother of James and a servant of Jesus Christ, this letter emphasizes the importance of contending for the faith and remaining steadfast in the truth.

Psalms

The Book of Psalms is a collection of 150 poems, hymns, and prayers that express the feelings of Jewish people throughout various periods of their national history. It is often referred to as the hymnbook or “prayer book” of the Bible. The Psalms vary widely in content and tone, including cries of lament, shouts of praise, and other liturgies and meditations on Israel’s life before God.

The Psalms have many authors and are said to have been compiled by Ezra, the scribe. The are used in song and prayer around the world.
