In 2019, I travelled to Yangon, Myanmar with ActionOverseas/ActivateUs. We visited a bible college led by David Sum. The college trains young people from around Myanmar and sends them back to their home villages to evangelise. David was also evangelising in the shanty areas of Yangon. Not long after we left, David was given access to minister to prisoners in the country’s north. Here is an update I recently received from him:
This year, the college has 44 students. They are primarily from civil war areas and have no support from their family. Some students can go back to their own villages, but some cannot go back to their villages.
Despite the many restrictions in the country, they continue to evangelise. Although they cannot continue the prison evangelism or visit the remote areas after COVID-19 and the military coup, their inland missionaries are reaching their people with the gospel.
They are not able to evangelise in the shanty areas, or even do relief work. However, they are ministering to civil war victims who live in a village near Yangon. They visit the village about once a month and have planted a church there. The villagers were all Buddhists, but now most are very receptive to the Gospel.
Nationally, because of high inflation, prices have risen so much that many people only have one meal a day.
