The Two Prophets, The King And The Altar

Theme: Old Testament Narratives with Timeless Lessons In 1 Kings 13, we encounter a young prophet who boldly declares the word of the Lord—only to end up as a solemn cautionary tale. His story serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of obedience and discernment in our walk with God.

The Danger of Partial Obedience

One of the key lessons from this passage is that partial obedience is still disobedience. As believers, we are called to follow God’s commands fully, without compromise. Our obedience must be deeply rooted in Christ, who empowers us through the Holy Spirit to remain faithful.

Unlike the prophet in this story, Jesus perfectly obeyed the will of the Father, setting the ultimate example for us to follow. As He said in John 4:34, “My food is to do the will of him who sent me.”

So, are you fully obeying God’s commands, or do convenience and comfort sometimes take priority?

Discerning Truth and False Counsel

Another crucial takeaway from this passage is that not all counsel is from God. Even those we regard as trustworthy can unintentionally or intentionally mislead us. This is why we must remain anchored in Jesus and discern truth through His Word.

God Still Speaks, and Obedience Opens Doors

Though this narrative happened centuries ago, its lessons remain relevant today. God still speaks—through His Word, His Spirit, and wise counsel. When we choose obedience, we position ourselves to receive blessings, peace, and divine fulfilment.

Of course, we all fall short at times. But when we repent sincerely, God, in His mercy, restores us. While obedience may come at a cost, disobedience will always cost far more.

For a deeper reflection on this passage, listen to Elder Sam Aiyere’s sobering and challenging message—a word that will stir your heart and call you to a higher level of faithfulness.

There are many advantages to meeting together. As the writer of the book of Hebrews writes, “And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works, not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching.” (Hebrews 10:24-25) Do not miss this opportunity to meet and encourage your brothers and sisters! Often, we provide personal ministry and one-to-one encounters. Do not miss the opportunity to meet with God and be transformed.
