100 years celebration

2023 Convention – The Apostolic Churches in London Celebrating God’s Goodness

The 2023 convention will be devoted to celebrating 100 years of The Apostolic Churches in London. This will occur from 1-3 September, with in-person events at the All Nations’ Centre.

In case you have not heard about it (where have you been?), we will devote this year’s convention to celebrating 100 years of the Apostolic Churches in London. Yes, the Apostolic Church has been in London for a hundred years! 1923 the Apostolic Church held its Annual National Convention in the Peckham Assembly. It is better known as the Sumner Road Chapel.

Black Church History

If you have heard that name before, you may realise its significance. Pastor Thomas Kwame Brem-Wilson established the congregation in 1906, long before he was a pastor. Visiting the Welsh revival town, he became acquainted with the leaders of the Apostolic Church and carried that fire back to London. Local people complained about the noise of the vibrant Pentecostal expression. Accordingly, the church moved from place to place, eventually settling on Sumner Road.

People referred to the church pejoratively as the “Black Man’s Church,” being the first African-founded and led Pentecostal church in London if not all of Europe. Despite opposition, it remained a centre of worship for decades and still exists today, though its association with the Apostolic Church ended when new pastoral leadership took over from Pastor Brem-Wilson.

1923 Convention

Excerpt from “Riches of Grace” July 1923

“Riches of Grace” reported that the convention in the Peckham experienced a manifestation of the Power of God in salvation and the baptism of The Holy Spirit.

This did not happen in a vacuum. Prophetic words were issued regarding London in previous times, and those words were fulfilled. By the end of that year, four other assemblies used the Peckham Assembly as a gathering point. This includes assemblies from “Hammersmith, Dulwich, Peckham and the City assemblies, according to the testimony of L. Charlton in the December edition of Riches of Grace.”

It was a time of power, that we would like to see again in our city!

2023 Convention

This year we are inviting everyone from all London Assemblies to join together to celebrate a shared history.

There will be events to enjoy fellowship, as well as to learn, remember, celebrate, to cry out for the Power of God to manifest itself, and finally to experience the Power of God in each assembly! We have big expectations!
